New Sod Watering & Maintenance

  • Water your newly installed sod immediately!
  • Water sod at least 20 min per area 3 times a day: early morning, mid morning, late afternoon. Do not water sod too late! Grass blades staying wet overnight may result in fungus.
  • Maintain consistent moisture levels appropriate to weather conditions at all times.
  • Sod/soil should stay moist not soggy. Soggy sod/soil can lead to root rot. Check moisture levels frequently by lifting up your sod and checking for adequate moisture underneath and adjust accordingly.
  • Extreme Heat 90+: During extreme heat and wind you may need to adjust watering to 4 times a day to keep soil and grass blades from drying.
  • If your sod changes colors this is an indication of lack of or too much water. Check area, make adjustments accordingly, and resume watering schedule. Color change does not necessarily mean your sod is dead—don't give up!
  • Try to limit foot traffic on newly sodded areas to prevent creating pockets in soft soil and sliding of sod.
🌱

Rooting Timeline

Sod will typically start to root 10-14 days after installation depending on conditions. After sod is well rooted (3-4 weeks) you can adjust watering frequency to 2-3 times a week depending on weather conditions and temperatures.

✂️

Mowing Guidelines

Mow only as needed, no shorter than 4 inches. Check moisture before mowing to avoid damage. Sod should be rooted—check by trying to pull up on your sod.

🧩

Seams & Edges

You may notice seams between sod rolls after installation, and edges may be scalped during harvest from fields. Don't worry, these areas will grow together!
